University of Colorado at Boulder

The University of Colorado also known as CU is a public research institution found in Boulder in the State of Colorado. The university opened its doors to students on September 5, 1876. CU is a vibrant college town that has over 80 miles of walking and biking trails. The first building of CU, Old Main was built from pledges from the community and Boulder residents' land donation.

The University of Colorado participated in the V-12 Navy College Training Program in World War II. This opened the doors to a navy commission for the students. Further, the first university president, Joseph A. Sewall held his position from 1877 to 1887. The Sewall Dormitory was the first dormitory built in the campus in 1934 and it was named after him.

In 1877, the vision in the university for equal education for men and women began with Mary Rippon. She was among the first professors hired at Colorado. In addition, Rippon was one of the first women professors at a state university. The Mary Rippon Theater was built in 1939 to commemorate her. The theater is the venue of the annual event, Colorado Shakespeare Festival.

The main Colorado campus is at the south of the Pearl Street Mall. There are residential and academic buildings on the campus. The university has over 450 student organizations and clubs and approximately 20 sororities and fraternities. Freshmen are required to live in the campus dormitories. At night time, students can enjoy the CU NightRide shuttles and tour the city for free.
The architectural structure of the university was designed by Charles Klauder. It has a unique style which is popularly known as Tuscan Vernacular Revival. He used native stones such as sandstone, Indiana limestone, and tiles for the different details of the buildings. The university has been dubbed as one of the most stunning campuses in the nation in 2011.

The growth and development of CU Boulder can be charged to its fifth president, George Norlin. He made a firm stand during the time Ku Klux Klan had a powerful influence in the politics of Colorado. He guided the university through the tough times of the Great Depression and advocated freedom and academic excellence throughout his leadership. He was an indispensable part of what the university has become now. The Norlin Charge, the speech he read to the Class of 1935 is read as endnote for CU's commencement activities.
The University of Colorado is also active in collegiate sports. They compete in the NCAA Division I Pac-12 Conference. They have two official buffalo mascots that are named Chip, and a live buffalo called Ralphie V. They have a total of 13 NCAA Team Championship in skiing under their belt. Their other varsity teams for football, men and women's cross country have also won championships.

The university also takes pride in being the only school in the region to be one of the 62 elite research institutions that make up the Association of American Universities.
