Tree Pruning in Boulder, CO

Pruning is one very important skill in keeping a tree healthy and beautiful. Correct pruning encourages your plants to grow well. However, most beginners will not prune their plants fearing that they could do even more harm than good to them. But not doing anything is also a bad thing, so it is best to know the most effective way to prune your trees.

Why Should You Prune Your Trees

Pruning does a lot of benefits to your plants. Chopping the dead limbs and branches keep your tree's shape and size in check. Pruning improves the overall health and beauty of the plant.   Here are the steps to pruning your tree like a pro:

1.  Know the Best Time to Prune - Not every time is the best time to prune. There is the best season to prune a type of plant but if you see a dead or diseased branch or limb, you can trim that. If not, follow these simple rules:
  • Late Winter or Early Spring - You should prune before new buds grow. This rule is not applicable to trees with heavy sap flow because of risk that they the sap will bleed out. The best time to prune these kinds of trees is during summer.
  • Early to Mid-Summer - You might encourage growth if you prune your tree during this time, but it could also be detrimental to the plant.
  • Early to Mid-Fall - Do not prune your tree during this season because your tree is getting ready for the winter season.

2.  Use the Right Tools - If you want to prune your trees properly, you have to use the right equipment. Using the wrong tools can cause your trees harm and will not have positive results.  Use bypass pruners for live plant materials. Use anvil pruners on the other hand, if you are cutting dead limbs.

3.  Know Your Plant - Understand that every plant is different. Learn about the plants you have in your garden and you will know how to take care of them better. You have to be aware that some shrubs bloom on new wood.  Some trees, such as abelia and clethra, produce flowers during the present season's growth. If you want them to bloom in the same year, it is best to prune them in late winter. Other plants bloom on old wood from the preceding year.

4.  Know Which Parts to Prune - You have to be careful when deciding where to prune your shrub. Cutting it too far from the bud will not stimulate new growth. Further, you can cause damage to your plant if you cut it too close to the undeveloped leaf buds.

5.  Know How Much to Prune - For most plants, pruning them about one-third of the material will do the trick. Measure the shrub from the tip then chop one-third of the limb. Though there are some plants that need more pruning, it is best to be on the safe side if you are just a beginner.

Remember that pruning your tree should do it well, not harm. Consider these things when pruning your plant and be confident that you are doing well. Pruning is a skill and just like any other skills, the more you practice, the better you become at it.  Quality tree care starts with early pruning.
